The Importance of Colon and Prostate Cancer Screenings

Colon cancer is very common—in fact, according to the American Cancer Society, it is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States (excluding skin cancers). Prostate cancer is also common, with the American Cancer Society estimating that about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. As with other malignancies, colon cancer and prostate cancer are typically easiest to treat when they are still in their early stages, which is why colon cancer screenings and prostate cancer screenings are so important.

When to Start Colon and Prostate Cancer Screenings

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force generally recommends that adults begin receiving colon cancer screenings at age 45. However, certain individuals may need to be screened earlier than that, including those with inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome), or a personal or family history of colon cancer or polyps. Likewise, the American Cancer Society recommends that prostate cancer screenings begin at age 50 for men who are at average risk for developing the malignancy, and earlier for men with a higher risk.

The experienced team at Vituity Family Medicine Center’s Glendale clinic can provide you with personalized screening recommendations. It is important to note that you should still undergo colon cancer screenings and prostate cancer screenings even if you are not experiencing any symptoms of the malignancies.
